Following 9/11, Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island was designated as the primary recovery, forensic examination, and evidence processing site for debris transported from Ground Zero.
Thousands of law enforcement officers, firefighters, investigators, and recovery personnel worked there over many months in one of the largest recovery operations in U.S. history.
The Joint Task Force Recovery Center coordinated these efforts, making Fresh Kills a central location in the post-9/11 recovery and remembrance process.
