Before the early 1980s restructuring, the U.S. Air Force maintained Security Police Squadrons responsible for:
Base law enforcement
Nuclear security operations
Installation defense
Air base ground security
Strategic asset protection
During the Cold War, Incirlik AB served as a critical NATO installation in Turkey, placing the 39th Security Police Squadron at the center of regional defense and deterrence operations.
In the early 1980s, the Air Force merged Security Police and Air Base Defense functions under the new title Security Forces. This insignia reflects the unit designation before that transition.
